Annecy’s old town

With its rich history, Annecy has preserved many monuments and tourist sites. Overlooking the city, the Annecy castle – the former residence of the Counts of Geneva – is now home to a modern and regional art museum, as well as the Alpine Lakes observatory. With its many canals and arcade pedestrian streets, the old town is also known as the “Venice of the Alps”. Built in the middle of the Thiou canal, the island Palace has been used in various ways since the 12th Century, just until it became a prison. During your strolls, don’t miss the Paquier, the gardens of Europe, and the Pont des Amours. Among the religious edifices, the Saint-Pierre Cathedral is home to many works of baroque art.
